INTRODUCTION TO 209 primers
When it comes to reloading ammunition, one crucial component is the primer.
Without a primer, the cartridge will not fire, making it useless. These non-corrosive,
all weather primers deliver fast, dependable ignition under any shooting condition.
Primers are constantly and rigorously tested for consistency and sensitivity at temperatures and
conditions far beyond the range of normal usage.
Winchester guarantees better sensitivity for more positive firing in all guns, carefully-controlled weights
of primer mixtures, consistency in size and quality, precise measurements and tolerances for anvil heights
and stability in extremes of temperatures and humidity. However, not all primers are created equal.
Some are designed for specific types of ammunition, while others are more versatile.
One such primer that has gained popularity in recent years is the 209 primer. In this article,
we will take a closer look at what 209 primers are, their benefits and drawbacks, and how they compare to other types of primers.
WHAT ARE 209 PRIMERS?
A 209 primers is a type of shotgun primer that is used to ignite black powder or smokeless powder.
It is named after its corresponding shotgun shell, which is designated as the 209 primer size.
The primer itself is a small metal cup that contains a primary explosive.
When struck by the firing pin, the explosive is ignited, creating a small flame that ignites the gunpowder inside the cartridge.
BENEFITS OF USING 209 PRIMERS
One of the main benefits of using 209 muzzleloader primers is their reliability.
They are known to have a consistent ignition, which is important for accuracy and safety.
Additionally, 209 primers are versatile and can be used in a wide range of shotgun shells,
making them a popular choice among reloaders.
They are also easy to find and relatively affordable compared to other types of primers.
DRAWBACKS OF USING 209 PRIMERS
While 209 muzzleloader primers have many benefits, they also have some drawbacks.
One of the biggest concerns is their sensitivity. They are known to be more sensitive than other types of primers,
which can make them more dangerous to handle. Additionally, 209 primers produce a large flame and
can create more recoil than other types of primers, which may not be desirable for some shooters.
HOW DO 209 PRIMERS COMPARE TO OTHER TYPES OF PRIMERS?
When it comes to choosing a primer, there are several other options to consider.
One popular type is the 12-gauge primer, which is slightly larger than the 209 primer and is used primarily in 12-gauge shotgun shells.
Another option is the 209M primer, which is similar to the 209 muzzleloader primers but has a thicker cup and is designed for use with magnum loads.
In terms of performance, 209 primers are generally considered to be reliable and consistent,
which is why they are a popular choice for many reloaders. However, some shooters may prefer other
types of primers for their specific needs or preferences.
HOW TO USE 209 PRIMERS
Using 209 primers is relatively straightforward.
They should be handled with care, as they are sensitive and can be dangerous if mishandled.
To load a shotgun shell with a 209 primer, the primer should be placed into the primer pocket of the shell.
The primer should be seated flush with the base of the shell using a primer seating tool.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING 209 PRIMERS
When handling 209 primers, it is important to take proper safety precautions. They should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat and flame. Additionally, they should be handled with care and never struck or dropped. When reloading ammunition, it is important to follow proper reloading procedures and use the correct equipment to ensure safety.
CONCLUSION
Overall, 209 primers are a reliable and versatile choice for reloaders. While they may have some drawbacks, such as their sensitivity, they are still a popular choice for many shooters. When using 209 primers, it is important to take proper safety precautions and follow proper reloading procedures to ensure accuracy and safety.

There are two main types of shotgun primers – Boxer and Berdan. Boxer primers are the most commonly used type of primer in the United States, while Berdan primers are commonly used in Europe and other parts of the world. 209 PRIMERS
A primer is a short nucleic acid sequence that provides a starting point for DNA synthesis. In living organisms, primers are short strands of RNA. A primer must be synthesize by an enzyme primase, which is a type of RNA polymerase, before DNA replication can occur.
Federal primers are still out of stock, but there are some primers available, including Tula small rifle primers, Winchester large rifle and large rifle magnum. … Ballistic Products has primers in stock!
So what’s going on here — why can’t you find primers? One reason is that primer producers such as Federal and CCI are using the vast majority of the primers they make to complete their loaded ammunition, which is flying off the shelves.
Advantages of using a Small Rifle primer rather than the typical Large Rifle version are twofold. Use of the smaller, less aggressive cap can result in better consistency, particularly in the form of tighter standard deviations
IMR4227 does not need magnum primers to ignite. It does tho, like a full case(at or near compressed loads) and a firm crimp for complete burn. As others have said, while H110/W296 require mag primers in small cases like . 357, most other powders do not.
- Industry-leading precision and consistency
- Reliable ignition
- Built to extremely tight tolerances

Reviews of 209 primers
Top quality 6/13/2023 Very reliable, out of hundreds Ive had maybe two or three failed to fire and that may have just been a light primer strike. – Eric Woomer, FL Consistent & reliable ignition 1/11/2023 After 30 years of reloading pistol & rifle munitions, I am doing a deep dive into shotshells. Revivals of the old rolling thunder events has me wanting to develop my own loads. After getting up to speed on powders, primers, related 12ga components, Ive purchased my first batch of Cheddite primers, based on customer reviews here & elsewhere. With few exceptions, Cheddite is the best for the dollars spent. Supported by BPIs vast database of practical knowledge I know where I wish to start. Ill report the results come spring-summer season… – David Wemyss, CA Good primers 11/3/2022 While I havent purchased any of these primers directly from BPI, I have been purchasing them as part of loaded hulls for a long time. Now that BPI has been selling the RIO unprimed hulls Ive been using these to prime those hulls with great success. They fit tight and dont have any issues. I have yet to have a Cheddite primer fail to ignite in either pre-primed hulls or reloaded ones. Loading data is available for these primers. I would be buying them from BPI but I have a local source which saves me the HazMat fee and we are all trying to save money. But I do want to pass along my success story and the use of these especially in the RIO hulls that BPI is selling. They work well and the price from BPI is very competitive. Highly recommend. – JOE LEIGHTY, PA Gr8rig 3/7/2022 Great product at a good price!! Cheddite Primer 12/29/2021 Ive used this primer for 12, 20, 28, and 410 target and hunting. Have not experienced any malfunctions. Highly recommend it. Jim McWhirter They work 12/24/2021 They go bang. Very happy with them. Kenneth Chamberlain Cheddite Primers are gopod in USA shells. 12/20/2021 Ive been using these primers since 2018 and found them to be a good fit in Remington or Winchester AA hulls. Note have never found that they loosen primer pockets as many have claimed in 20 or 12 gauge hulls. However I did have the case head on one single STS 410 hull split, the other 99 did not. As for defects, in the past year I have had 3 primers fail to fire but that was out of 7000 rounds loaded. Note, I shoot competitive Skeet so there is a LOT of practice involved, typically around 8000 rounds per year. Prior to this year Ive never had a Cheddite primer fail to fire. Scooter Primers 11/28/2021 It was a pleasure doing business with BPI. I ordered primers when they were available and I should be good for a little while. Now I wont have to take up bowling! Thanks again and hats off to BPI for the primers! The best price during the shortage 11/22/2021 The service is great. People buying need to have patients as getting orders take about 2 weeks to get ready. – Steve Torris, CA Great customer service Do not shoot in Krieghoff 11/16/2021 I purchased 5000 Cheddite primers. I loaded several with different powders and wads. I had several primers pierced with my Krieghoff K80. I spoke to Krieghoff and it is very common with those guns. I have zero issues with Winchester 209, Fiocchi 616 primers piercing. I would beware if you shoot a Krieghoff. – Nathan Hall, IN Perfect seating in AA and Gun Club Hulls 11/9/2021 I interchange these with federal 209A and Win209s on a regular basis. They all seat perfectly no matter which one I use before. They feed through my MEC 9000gn newer primer feeder every time without anything hanging up, so if they do, its probably a simple adjustment at the feeder mount bolt and/or the release button cam. I have 4 9000s and they all feed perfectly 12,20,28,410. I know nothing about the older version feeder with the steel chain on it. – RJ Skeet, NH Great Primers – Even Better Price 11/6/2021 These primers are very reliable. I get full powder ignition across a wide variety of loads. You simply will not find a better price than here at BPI. Awesome product. Hans Swartzentruber Review 11/1/2021 Haven?t tried them yet William Ferris Love these primers 10/19/2021 This is the first time Ive used these primers and have to say Im a fan. They are affordable and seem to more or less match the WIN 209 primers I was using. They fit very well into European hulls but will stretch the primer pockets of American hulls…FYI. I plan to buy more if they ever come back into inventory as I will make them my go-to for as many loads as possible. – Jim R, SD Pronounced sh-deet 9/28/2021 These are great shotshell primers! I pronounced them ched-dite for years, until I had to phone in an order and heard somebody say it right. no issues with cheddite 9/17/2021 Dont understand the fuss over size. Have used them in Remington and Winchester shells, then reloaded with either Remington or Winchester primers. No primer has fallen out. I do use an o/u, so maybe different in a semi. Skull Thank you BP 9/17/2021 Just purchased Cheddite 209 shotshell primers and it is so refreshing that you kept your price point close to pre-covid and pre-panic pricing. As we all know, the current primer and powder pricing we are seeing is just too expensive. The hazmat coupon was much appreciated as well! Thank you again, you will be my first choice for my reloading needs! – Ken Branson, OH Cheddite primers 9/14/2021 The more recently imported Cheddite primers in the blue packaging appear to be made to US size spec standards. They work well in all of my Remington Winchester and federal hulls – Greg Sesler, PA Shotguner 8/10/2021 Good Avid shotguner 8/10/2021 Excellent CHEDDITE SHOTSHELL PRIMERS 8/10/2021 BOUGHT THESE BECAUSE THEY WERE THE ONLY BRAND AVAILABLE. I LOAD 12 GA, 1 1/8 OZ , RED DOT POWDER, CLAYBUSTER WAD. THESE PRIMERS WORK AS WELL AS FEDERAL OR WINCHESTER. GLAD I WAS ABLE TO GET ENOUGH TO KEEP SHOOTING. ROBERT M USMC 8/9/2021 Great selection Primers 8/1/2021 Fantastic service with no bull thanks Dominick Tofolo Brilliant service and support 2/8/2021 BP rocks. The load development and load kit combos are amazing. Smart and helpful folks answer the phones and emails. Great product offerings including ched primers and hulls now obviously out of stock here and everywhere. We are all obviously waiting on the manufacturers but I’m counting on BP. work great 7/20/2018 Started using thees to keep cost down and they work as good as the name brands. – steve, AP Inches vs metric 8/27/2016 Federal primers are made in inches . Cheddite are metric. Cheddite will hang up. Use USA primers in USA shells & use Metric in Europian shells. USA primers are 0.241 Metric is .0242 – Len Steyer, OH Only Primer Lacquer Sealed?? 12/21/2013 Advertised as the only primer that is lacquer sealed but WOLF 209 primers have the same seal…so Im curious as to who is making what for whom?? Henry Cheddite 209 Primers 4/12/2013 Used this for my first ever 12ga loads, Used a mec 600jr with #302-118 charge bar, hodgdon clays, remington gun club hulls and rem fig8s wads. With 1.125 oz of shot the shot gets there much faster than any factory load and is great for busting clays. – Edward, OR Shot shell primer 4/10/2013 Its a good primer with lots of data behind it. The primer is .001 larger in diameter and what that means it once you use these your best to stay with them because the primer pocket hole gets stretched out and if you go back to a fed primer it may fall out from the recoil. so once you go cheddite stay with them. Its a great primer you wont be sorry. – Gader, IL CHEEP AND GOOD 8/20/2011 HAVE USED CHEDDITE PRIMERS IN 12GA. RELOADS AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THEM THE LOAD AND PREFORM AS GOOD AS WIN.209 PRIMER AT A FRACTION OF THE COST. THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE HEARD IS WITH THE FIRING PIN GONING THROUGH ON SUB GAUGES.

I am a retired police officer. when I was issued my m4 for patrol use it only had one mag with it, when I ask for another the Lt. stated one was enough. well I went to a local gun shop and the sales person stated he had a large selection. he then handed me a c mag and said try this one. I went to the range that week and well it worked as good as the factory bushmaster mag that came with the rifle. I went to the shop paid for that one and bought two more. they served me well for the next five years and when I retired two years ago I took my mag’s and I am glade to say they still work like new today.

Amazing how fast these and ALL PRIMERS sell out now! Get a notification from midway at 11:58am read the message at 12:00, place order at 12:06, they’re sold out at 12:15( lucky I was looking at my email at the time and got 5000). I mean geez people are buying and buying and buying, powder is no different now, ITS MADNESS…..reminds me of the toilet paper shortage. Anyway Winchester makes darn good primers, especially their 209 primers. They go bang EVERY TIME, they are just slightly oversized compared to federal by .0005″, and slightly undersized compared to fiocchi and Cheddite by .0005″. And are .0015″ bigger than cci. So they will be tight going into a cci loaded shotshell and snug in a federal primed shell, will need a little help in a fiocchi or Cheddite shell(primer sealant or nail polish works). Now DONT EVEN TRY A RIO SHELL! RIO PRIMERS ARE MAJORLY OVERSIZED AT .245″, a good .0035″ over the Winchester primers. Rio primers are ridiculously oversized and will ruin your shotshell primer pockets for any other primer. Cant go wrong with Winchester 209 primers and I’m glad I was able to score 5000 amid all this PANIC BUYING. Great reliable primer!

They’re shotgun primers, they go bang, and fit good.
Vanammo –
I bought these to reload shotgun shells in 12, 20, and 410 gauges.
Vanammo –
I will buy more as needed
Vanammo –
This is the only primer that I use. The #209 has served me well for 40 years.
Vanammo –
Reloading shot shells and zero failures!
Vanammo –
I use Winchester 209 primers in all my shot shell reloads from heavy to light and have yet to have a failure. It’s the only primer I buy.
Vanammo –
I only buy Winchester 209 primers
Vanammo –
I’ve never had any problems with Winchester primers.
Vanammo –
i use them in all my 12 gauge reloads have never had a blooper
Vanammo –
these are the best 209’s on the market for reloading
Vanammo –
I use these primers for my 20 ga reloading as well as 28 ga reloading
Vanammo –
Winchester 209 are probably the most popular primers for shotgun reloading so I’m sure everyone knows how great of product they are, the thing I was impressed the shipping. I never ordered primers online because I thought the hazmat charge would be outrageous but I have to say it’s not bad and worth having them shipped to my house.
Vanammo –
Great job on the shipping
Vanammo –
I have use this product a lot.
Vanammo –
Great primer that is consistent and one I would not be without
Vanammo –
What is there to say about primers, It’s been my experience, if you stick with name brands you will very seldom have a misfire do to a primer issue. One thing I’ve noticed, with shotgun primers is, after a lot of reloads the primer pocket gets wore out, CCI is just a hair bigger and will hold better. With that being said, once you use them you can’t use any other as they stretch out the pocket
Vanammo –
I use winchester primers for all my reloads, I’ve occasionally had light strikes from bad seating, but never a failed primer.
Vanammo –
It’s the only primer I use. Tried others and had double strikes to fire the shell. Never had a failure with the Winchester 209.
Vanammo –
I’ve been using Winchester 209 primers for 40 years, thousands of reloads, and NEVER had a misfire ! What more is there to say ?
Vanammo –
These are the only primers I use. I have been using then since the 80s. They are consistent and reliable.
Vanammo –
Reloading made easy with no misfires and constant loading in Remington hulls
Vanammo –
My dad showed me how to reload when i was 7. I took over reloading for all our 12 Ga. and 20 Ga. Shells for trap and skeet. The one thing he taught me is you get what you pay for, and never buy cheap components. These have never let me down in the past 33 years I’ve used them for reloading, and i normally load between 3,000 and 5,000 rounds per year.
Vanammo –
I got a box of these from a local gun shop and liked them, I saw them on Midway USA cheaper and got a thousand rounds of them. I use them in my 50cal. inline black powder rifle and I’ve never had any problems with dry fires. They always shoot fine. I’ll buy another 1000 rounds when the 1st ones are gone.
Vanammo –
I’ve been using this primer for the better part of forty years. Mostly in trap loads and some hunting loads. They have never let me down. I’ll continue to use them as long as I can get out and shoot trap and get some hunting in to.
Vanammo –
These are the most versitle and consistent primers I’ve found. You can find workable loads using most powder, hull, and was combinations.
Vanammo –
Reloading shot shells. Never had a failure. Been reloading for 12 years.
Vanammo –
Flat head and 100% reliable
Vanammo –
I use these in a variety of hulls both 28ga and 410 with no difficulties.
Vanammo –
I prefer Winchester for all primers, regardless of firearm type.
Vanammo –
I have never had a misfire with this primer.
Vanammo –
Have used thousands, pull the trigger and they go boom. Every time!
Vanammo –
at least the last 5000 rounds of 12 and 20 gauge ammo have used this primer with zero problems also seems to be reasonably available
Vanammo –
I have used the Winchester 209 primer for over 500,000 target loads. As a competitive trap shooter, I have total trust that they will go bang. I have loaded all 3 cases with the same results.
Vanammo –
I have gone through about 6,000 Winchester 209 primers reloading shot shells and have never had a misfire. These will continue to be my preference when reloading.
Vanammo –
I have used Winchester small rifle primers for reloading my .223 rounds for many years and can sum up their performance in three words: never a failure. Besides, they are conveniently packaged; I hardly ever have to shake my primer tray to right a leaner or upside down primer, which saves a few seconds several times a reloading day.
Vanammo –
use w209 in all my shotgun reloading…they never seem to fail…go bang with every shot…feed flawlessly in my reloader
Vanammo –
Always dependable. Over the last 40+ years I have used well over 100,000 Winchester 209 primers without a single failure. What more can you say? They just plain work!
Vanammo –
They do the job. Goes bang every time.
Vanammo –
An excellent and dependable primer!
Vanammo –
I use these primers with Win AA hull for my reloading system. I shoot new Win AA in competition and reloads for training. I never had a misfire and would trust them for running a 100 straight. I typically shoot about 250 rounds a week, so I reload 500 shells every two weeks. These primers are the only ones I trust. So, stick with a winner…
Vanammo –
We’ve loaded 5,000 of these over the last three months and have not had a single FTF with them. They seat nice, plenty of loading data out ther for them. Very reliable ignition and performance. They may not be the cheapest primers out there, but when you are shooting a competition, is it honestly worth saving a couple of bucks per 1K primers when a single FTF can cost you a trophy or the pot.
Vanammo –
11K plus shells loaded from .410 to 12ga and I’ve only had 1 failure! Pretty good in my opinion. Great Primers!
Vanammo –
