blackhorn 209 canada powder history

Blackhorn 209 canada powder has an interesting history that dates back to the late 1990s. Here’s a brief overview of its development and how it became a popular choice among muzzleloader enthusiasts:

  1. Early Development:
Blackhorn 209 canada powder was developed by Western Powders Inc., a company specializing in smokeless powders and ammunition. The goal was to create a propellant that would address the limitations and challenges associated with traditional black powder and other black powder substitutes used in muzzleloading firearms.
  2. Addressing Challenges:
Traditional black powder and some black powder substitutes had certain drawbacks, including inconsistent ignition, residue buildup, and the need for frequent cleaning between shots. These factors could affect accuracy, reliability, and overall shooting experience. Western Powders set out to develop a propellant that would overcome these challenges.
  3. Unique Formulation:
After extensive research and development, Western Powders introduced Blackhorn 209 powder to the market. What made it unique was its sulfur-free formulation and the use of modern smokeless powder technology. The absence of sulfur eliminated the corrosive properties associated with traditional black powder, making it easier to clean and maintain muzzleloaders.
  4. Performance and Benefits:
Blackhorn 209 powder quickly gained popularity among muzzleloader enthusiasts due to its exceptional performance and numerous benefits. Some of the key advantages include consistent ignition, high energy content, minimal fouling, and a long shelf life. Shooters experienced improved accuracy, reduced cleaning requirements, and increased shot-to-shot velocities.
  5. Legal Approval and Acceptance:
Blackhorn 209 powder received legal approval for use in muzzleloaders from various regulatory bodies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Its acceptance in shooting competitions and hunting regulations further contributed to its popularity and widespread adoption among muzzleloader users.
  6. Continued Development:
Since its introduction, Western Powders has continued to refine and improve Blackhorn 209 powder. The company has conducted extensive testing, research, and development to enhance its performance and ensure compatibility with a wide range of muzzleloading firearms and projectiles.
  7. Industry Recognition:
Blackhorn 209 powder has garnered recognition and accolades within the shooting community. It has received positive reviews from shooters, hunters, and industry experts who appreciate its consistent performance, reliability, and ease of use.

Today, Blackhorn 209 canada powder remains a popular choice for muzzleloader enthusiasts who seek a propellant that combines the benefits of modern smokeless powders with the convenience of traditional black powder substitutes. Its success and widespread adoption have made it a significant player in the muzzleloading market, providing shooters with a reliable and efficient alternative for their shooting needs.

  1. Vanammo

Not cheap but worth the price of admission! I’m using this in a CVA Optima V2. I had to get the blackhorn breech plug. Lights fine with STS Remington primers. It’s a lot cleaner than any other bp substitute I’ve used. Not only that, but it’s noticably hotter than bp substitutes. And that’s all fine and dandy on its own, but then you factor in accuracy, and you got something special. I’m shooting 75gr of this under either a Barnes T-EZ, or federal bor lock and accuracy has been excellent, and clean up is easy. I definitely understand why it’s so popular.

  2. Vanammo

You can use something other than 209 primers. I have a T/C Black Diamond and I use musket caps and it never fails. The accuracy is phenomenal, less than an inch at 100 yds using Speer 270 gr deep curl.

  3. Vanammo

Blackhorn delivers great accuracy and velocities in my rifles. Really like not having to clean gun immediately after firing. However it has gotten crazy expensive. The new containers are 8 oz not 10 oz that Midway lists. Alabama only has a 5 day muzzle loader season so I don’t use a lot of it.

  4. Vanammo

Has been a great powder in my TC Encore. This is my 6th year hunting with the same 10oz can and it has been remarkably shelf stable and consistent over time. I suspect that folks who have trouble with it are either using the wrong primer or have the wrong breach plug. Keep the flash hole clean and use a hot 209 primer (not a 209 muzzle loader primer!) and you will never look back.

  5. Vanammo

Been using this stuff for years now and I cannot see using anything else in a high-performance in-line muzzleloader. Shooting it in my 45 caliber Omega, using Precision Rifle’s 45 caliber sabots and 35 caliber 190 grain lead ballistic tips, with 120 grains of this powder and the 25 ACP conversion breach plug with small rifle magnum primers. Typical three shot groups at 100 yards are just under an inch. Loading is somewhat of a tight fit but the accuracy is worth it. I can usually shoot as many shots as I want and not have to swab the bore between shots. With the velocities I’m getting, I’m basically shooting a 35 Whelan and have made shots all the way out to and including 300 yards. One item of concern is that you do have to use a hot 209 primer and not a milder muzzleloading type or a .410 primer. It says so right on the container and they are correct.

  6. Vanammo

I had reviewed this as a muzzleloader propellant a while back and was impressed, so I decided to update it with my results in cartridges as well. I recently decided to just play with it a bit in 327 Federal, and the results were honestly pretty shocking. It turned out to be THE most accurate powder I’ve ever used in it with 115gr cast bullets. The attached picture was a group shot off a bench at 25 yards. I did try it in 32 S&W Long cases, too. The results were not as impressive as the 327, but the accuracy was still pretty decent. Cleanup was no worse than a day of shooting something dirty like moderate loaded Unique or Bullseye. The brass did tarnish inside a fair bit, but the outsides cleaned right up just fine after a few hours in the tumbler. So, if you want to play with some smokey reloads without the hassle of black powder cleanup, this stuff is a pretty good, albeit expensive option.

  7. Vanammo

90 gr in my Lymans Great Plains 54 and in my old sharon barrel TC Hawken 50 with 209 magsparks on both. Tight groups at 100 and PLENTY of power. 20 shots each at the range and no cleaning until the end. Great Stuff. Lets you shoot more at the range. Highly recommend!

  8. Vanammo

Been using Triple Seven for years. Always reload after hitting animal even if looks stone dead. Last elk and last antelope were high lung hits, shot the elk second time through both lungs, then once more when it laid down. By fourth reload could barely get the sabot down the dirty barrel, left too breathless to shoot straight, good I didn’t have to. Tried this stuff with Thor bullets, five reloads easy, I’ll never go back. Save shipping and hazard costs and buy at Sportsmans’ W.

  9. Vanammo

This is by far the best powder for muzzleloaders in my opinion. It burns clean enough that it is not necessary to clean after each shot, and it’s very consistent.
